Platen Rollers
The platen roller works directly beneath the printhead, providing the backing surface against which the printhead presses to transfer heat to the label and drive media through the printer at a controlled, consistent rate. It is the second most important wear component in a thermal label printer after the printhead itself, and the two should be thought of as a pair — when you replace one, it is generally good maintenance practice to inspect the other. A platen roller in good condition has a uniform, slightly tacky rubber surface that grips the label stock firmly and feeds it through at consistent tension and speed. As the roller wears, the rubber surface hardens, glazes, or develops flat spots and grooves from continuous contact with the printhead and media. The symptoms are familiar: labels feeding at an angle (skew), inconsistent label registration, slippage at high print speeds, and print that shifts position across a label run. None of these problems can be fixed by adjusting printer settings — they require roller replacement.
