Direct Thermal Labels

Direct thermal labels print without a ribbon. The printhead applies heat directly to a chemically treated facestock, producing the image through a reaction in the label itself rather than transferring ink from a separate ribbon. That makes direct thermal printing simpler and faster to set up, with no ribbon to load, monitor, or replace — an advantage in high-turnover environments and mobile printing applications. The tradeoff is durability. Direct thermal labels are more susceptible to fading from prolonged heat, UV light, and certain chemicals than thermally transferred print, which makes them best suited for shorter-lifespan applications: shipping labels, receiving documents, pick tickets, patient wristbands, receipts, and similar uses where the label serves its purpose and is discarded rather than archived or exposed to harsh conditions. We carry Zebra's direct thermal label line across standard and premium grades. The Z-Perform 1000D is an uncoated, economical option for everyday low-durability applications. The Z-Perform 2000D and Z-Select 4000D are coated stocks that deliver better image quality and slightly improved resistance to handling and environmental exposure. All are available in sizes including 4x2, 4x6, and 3x2 inches with 1-inch and 3-inch core options.
